Swegreen Expands In-Store Farming with New Installations at Coop

Swegreen has successfully launched new in-store farms in collaboration with Coop, a major retail actor in the Nordics, marking another step toward a more sustainable and self-sufficient food system in Sweden.

Nordic countries, and Sweden in particular, remain heavily dependent on vegetable imports, often from Southern and Central Europe or even North Africa. Swegreen’s on-site farming technology provides a scalable alternative - allowing fresh greens to be grown and harvested directly in-store year-round, day and day out. These high-tech farming platforms are easy to operate, require up to 99 percent less water than traditional agriculture, cultivate without pesticides, and eliminate all logistics and transport emissions, delivering fresher, more flavorful greens with superior nutritional value and zero food miles.

The installations, now operational in collaboration with Coop's regional cooperative Coop Östra, are located at:

Coop Barkarby
Coop Spånga
Coop Bromma
Coop Haninge
Coop Stuvsta

"Our collaboration with Coop is a key milestone and only in its’ beginning. We have a clear vision of making Sweden more self-sufficient in leafy greens and herbs while reducing the sector’s climate impact. With our technology, we can provide premium, fresher, and more sustainable greens—grown exactly where consumers need them. The potential for expansion is significant, both within grocery retail and other sectors for Swegreen."

Driving the Future of Hyperlocal Food Production

Swegreen’s advanced farming technology enables retailers, restaurants, hotels, and property owners to integrate on-site food production into their premises, reducing dependence on imports and logistics while ensuring long-term sustainability.

A Scalable, Profitable Business Model

  • Rising demand for in-store farming - Much like in-store bake-off revolutionized the food retail sector, on-site farming is now emerging as the next wave of transformation.

  • A strong business case - Lower transport costs, longer shelf life, and a premium product create a win-win model for both Swegreen and its partners.

  • Increased food security - With growing uncertainties in global supply chains, local production is becoming an increasingly essential component of national food strategies.

As demand for locally produced, fresh, and sustainably grown greens continues to grow, Swegreen’s innovative farming solutions enable retailers to harvest directly in-store, offering consumers the freshest possible producepesticide-free, with zero food miles and no need for cold storage. Swegreen is leading the transformation of food production, offering a scalable, innovative solution that aligns with the future of sustainable retail and urban farming.
