Our resources are shrinking, and providing the global population with energy, fresh water and food supply is one of the momentous universal challenges.
The transitions after the post industrial era, hand in hand with urbanization trends, have led to unleashed GHG emissions creating the phenomena of Global warming and Climate change issues. Climate Change impacts are becoming more and more evident and also widely accepted as one of the topmost threats to humanity and our planet ecosystem services.
Food and Agriculture sector is accountable for 30% of global CO2 and GHG emissions. More than one third of every household’s environmental footprint in the northern hemisphere is as well food based. Solving the climate issue has a strong bond with creation of smarter and more sustainable agricultural and farming systems.
The global average temperature has risen by 2 to 5 °C in various altitudes compared to pre-industrial era and fossil-based fuel consumption outbreak. And another 2 degrees could push the planet’s ecosystems over a tipping edge.
The United Nations General Assembly has set 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the year 2030, also known as Agenda 2030, to address the climate issue and combat climate change to limit global temperature rise to well below 2 °C.

Local food supply dedicates directly to less food security and Agri food export indexes. Facts: Our Cityfarm in Stockholm has a production capacity of 30 tons of leafy greens and herbs per year, in an area of 400 m 2, which makes Stockholm more self- sufficient in case of small greens by at least 3-4%!
SDG3: Good Health and Well-Being
Promotion of healthier life styles based on plant-based diets, locally produced greens of high quality and consumption of an alternative with significantly smaller CO 2 footprint dedicates to community-level health and well-being!
SDG9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.
Development and defining the future of controlled-environment urban farming based on high-tech industry value and smart technologies gives SweGreen a global leading position. SDG11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Scientific research shows that future cities projects a need to produce 10-15% of their food supply demand within their geographical borders, these produce are usually the ones consumed fresh such as leafy greens and herbs. By combing farming technologies with water-energy-waste cleantech engineering and flow management, SweGreen pledges to more sustainable communities and smarter cities.
SDG12: Responsible Consumption and Production
Locally produced green presented to consumers in short supply chains balances the demand and supply needs of a sustainable community, zero-miles food systems and promotes minimization of waste and loss in food chains. 30% of global food produced in the world is wasted from farm to fork

This is summarizing the mission and vision of SweGreen! Showing courtesy towards our physical and biological environment, production of high quality and locally-produced greens in controlled-environment systems for lowering down CO 2 footprint of our greens by help of our unique infrastructure and real-estate integrated technology are the core values of SweGreen! In practice the innovative technologies that we develop and apply enable us to deliver the following in practice through the CityFarm project.
- We spare 4 hectares of land from degradation due to intensive conventional agriculture by efficient production system and area effective farming methods indoor in just 400 m 2 !
- We save 8 000 000 liters of water/year by lowering down our water efficiency and by help of dehumidifier systems from 250 lit/kg in traditional farming to 1.2 lit/kg. That amount of fresh water is water needed for 200 000 children for a day!
- We reduce our host buildings’ climate footprint by 200 tons of CO 2 /year due to use of renewables and compensating the building by surplus heat instead of fossil-based electricity and district heating!
- We provide freshest food possible by minimizing food miles travelled by our product from an average of 2000 km to just 5 km!
- We keep the water bodies, lakes and oceans intact from pollution and eutrophication, by circulating our flows in closed loops and having no run-offs plus use of no pesticide or chemicals in our production system.
